SJEDS serves the Farmington MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area), including Aztec, Farmington, Bloomfield and San Juan County, New Mexico.
The State of New Mexico has a total of four metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) that are fully or partially located in the state. Seven of the state's 33 counties are classified by the United States Census Bureau as MSA. A metropolitan statistical area refers to a geographical region with a relatively high population density at its core and close economic ties throughout the area.

Presenter at SJEDS Board February 8 Board Meeting, Bill Luttrell said the county's goal should be to diversify. "A diversified economy will have sustainable growth." Bill Luttrell, senior locations strategist with Werner Enterprise, spoke to SJEDS members at the Wednesday, Feb. 8, meeting. The National Geographic Geotourism MapGuide Project, puts the Four Corners area on the map. Presented by City of Aztec Mayor Sally Barbridge and Planning Director Roshana Moojen, the Trail of the Ancients – Four Corners Area Geotourism Project promotes tourism in a manner that enhances the unique aspects of a geographic place.
