San Juan County Profile

San Juan County lies in the northwest corner of New Mexico, where it adjoins Colorado, Utah and Arizona and is partially contained in the Navajo Nation. Rich in cultural treasures and environmental splendor, the county is centrally located in the vast outdoor playground of deserts, canyons, mountains and waterways that make up the Four Corners.

For a number of years, San Juan has been the fastest growing county in New Mexico. Its population increased by more than 24% between 1990 and 2000, to 113,801. Currently, in 2008 the population is approximately 126,000. See federals statistics at www.factfinder.census.gov.

San Juan County, as well as the cities of Aztec, Bloomfield and Farmington, are each certified with the New Mexico Economic Development Department’s Certified Communities Initiative. This designation reflects empowered communities who actively plan for a healthy economic future. Also see
nmpartnershp.com, Certified Communities web page at New Mexico Economic Development Department, and the Certified Communities brochure from New Mexico Economic Development Department.

The county's economy, based in natural resources, power production and regional trade, is diversified and expanding. Yet the cost of living is modest and the ready access to nearby summer and winter outdoor recreational opportunities is outstanding. San Juan County is a great place to live and work.
