Aztec, New Mexico was originally settled by Pueblan Indians in the 13th century. The ruined city they left behind on the banks of the Animas River is an outlier of the Chacoan civilization that once extended from northern Mexico into southern Utah.
Today Aztec is a town of 6,378 with an historic town center.
It is the seat of San Juan County government and home to the Aztec Ruins
National Monument.
Aztec is located between the larger cities of Farmington,
New Mexico, and Durango, Colorado, with comfortable residential neighborhoods
and a picturesque central business district that houses several thriving
local
businesses.
