SJEDS Overview I Economic Development--what is it? I Investment Campaign for Economic Development

SJEDS--San Juan Economic Development Service...connecting companies with resources since 1989.

Looking to expand or relocate your business in northern New Mexico? SJEDS is the first point of contact to connect expanding companies with resources to contribute to their success. SJEDS collaborates with San Juan County, San Juan College, the cities of Aztec, Bloomfield, and Farmington, as well as the Navajo Nation on pertinent issues and projects for the purpose of job creation and developing a healthy and more diverse economy. We can help you find the resources for business expansion and relocation.

Call us if you would like information on business relocation, business incubation, the workforce, tax incentives or economic development in general.

SJEDS is housed in the Quality Center for Business at San Juan College, Farmington New Mexico. The Quality Center for Business was created out of a unique partnership between the City of Farmington and San Juan College. Also located here is the Business & Industry Training Center, the Enterprise Center (business incubator), the Small Business Development Center, the New Mexico Procurement Assistance Program, and the Northwest New Mexico Council of Governments’ field office.

Economic Development--What is it?

Economic Development is business creation, business retention and expansion, and business recruitment.

In business creation we assist entrepreneurs in taking their ideas from their garage to the world by connecting them with resources to help them succeed. In business retention and expansion we partner creatively to ensure that businesses want to stay in our area, especially because 80% of all jobs created come from existing industries. Business leave an area for two main reasons--because they thought no one cared, and because they were treated poorly. New businesses are recruited or encouraged to develop in San Juan County because of the following:

  • Availability of Land & Buildings
  • Availability of Skilled Labor
  • Labor Costs
  • Highway Accessibility
  • Energy Availability & Cost
  • Availability of Telecommunications
  • Tax Exemptions
  • Construction Costs
  • State & Local Incentives
  • Proximity to Major Markets (Transportation)

We promote job creation to give a greater number of people greater access to wealth through personal economic growth, to increase the tax base of communities in order to provide a higher quality public service to citizens, and to diversify the economic base of the community.

With the diversity of manufacturing, tourism, and oil and gas exploration, production and support services, San Juan County has grown steadily for the past three decades even during national fluctuations. In San Juan County, your business will find a growing marketplace, a ready workforce and the resources it needs to prosper. Contact us for more information.

SJEDS Investment Campaign for Economic Development
Moving San Juan County Forward

SJEDS' goal is to develop the long-term stable funding base and sustainable economic development programs to move San Juan County's economy forward. SJEDS is the leading organization in the role of securing our economy future. Success is a strong economy with quality jobs, growing companies and diversified economic growth for San Juan County.

Vision: Build on SJEDS success and increase its capacity to serve its stakeholders through sustainable funding and community support.

Objectives for the Investment Campaign: Increased funding for SJEDS annual programs. Based on research of comparable Economic Development Organizations (EDOs) done by SJEDS in the Spring of 2006, the funding “best practices” of other EDOs are from public and private sources, with about 50% public and 50% private. SJEDS will continue to maintain the public sector funding base and to work to substantially increase the private sector funding during 2007-2011.

What will we do with the additional funding from investors? The funding will increase SJEDS capacity in their programs, support for economic development in the County and SJEDS staffing levels.

SJEDS projects for 2007 through 2011, given investor funding:

  1. Industrial Park expansion:  SJEDS is working with Farmington, Aztec and Bloomfield to assist with their industrial parks (new & existing).
  2. Recruitment of new companies to San Juan County, and the ongoing support of the Enterprise Center at the College to create new jobs and companies to further diversify the economic base of the region.
  3. Employer support programs for San Juan County employers in their recruiting efforts for professionals within the County and from outside the County, such as workforce training (in coordination with San Juan College), programs to support ‘trailing spouses’, and ongoing support of employers as they work to improve their workforce.
  4. Enhanced access to economic research and database information systems for local and regional employers, including expanded SJEDS web site information
  5. Promote inter-company business and economic development opportunities among SJEDS investor companies in San Juan County.
